Regeneration of the Ripped

2024

Various bio-based materials, steel frame, orange nylon rope, projection mapping.

200 x 200 cm.

Regeneration of the Ripped is an improvisational collage made from bioplastic scraps. The work was created after the unexpected tearing of a sheet from the Salvage System installation. The sheet was ripped and torn apart, with most of it collapsed on the floor. Multiple sharp, torn edges were scattered across the sheet, as if it had been slashed by a knife.

CCTV footage from the studio was examined to rule out all possibilities. Multiple scenarios were tested in an attempt to identify the cause. The speculative explanation is that the sheet might have torn on its own due to its material properties, intense humidity, heat, or mold.

Although this incident was shocking, it was not entirely unexpected in my biomaterials practice, where most materials are in their early stages and require testing and observation to understand how they interact with the environment. This event sparked an idea for repairing the damaged sheet—to explore how the broken material might extend its life beyond its original form.

The installation was featured in the Earth Chamber exhibition by 555 at GalileOasis in December 2024.
